The Story of Legend

((Mistake.)) Catherine trotted after him.

Branch walked along, and felt like he was having a flash back. A dappled brown and white wolf was turning her back on him, and was walking away. he cried out, but she went faster, and was gone. Branch shook his head, and looked at Catherine.

Catherine was having a similar flashback. A handsome gray wolf looked at her. "Sorry, Catherine. I can't force myself to live in another's shadow. You're casting a pretty big shadow." The wolf's cold silver eyes stared at her, then broke away. "No...I can change..." she whispered. Catherine blinked her eyes and looked at Branch. Was she betraying SmokeShadow, falling in love again? But he betrayed me, a voice inside her thought. So why bother? Catherine shook herself lose.

Branch shook his fur, and grinned at Catherine. Was he betraying .. He dared think her name, Goldenfur, by loving Catherine. No, he thought, I can't be, I mean, she left me, she didn't want me.

Suddenly, a horrid thought occured to Catherine. What if Smokeshadow wanted her back now? Would she have to rip herself between Her old lover and new? "Oh, that'd be gruesome..." Catherine whispered to herself, mortified.

The same thought occured to Branch. But why would Goldenfur want him now? Thats right, she didn't .. She didn't know where Branch was, or did she?

Smokeshadow had looked back with tears in his eyes. He had betrayed her, though. Smokeshadow's own brother had killed her Aunt! "Ugh..." Catherine said. Smokeshadow...lessee. Any reason he might want her back? None I can think of... she thought sarcastically.He's probably just only ruling a kingdom with his brother... she thought cruelly.

Branch suddenly looked all stiff, as if in a trance. He had saw a flash of gold and yellow through the trees, and instantly his legs went to jelly. He looked again, it couldn't be.. But.. Goldenfur appeared. SHe looked at Branch, her face confused and furious. Branch's fur nearly touched Catherine's.

"HEy-" Catherine held her breath. A flash of gray. Please be a swarm of rats instead of who I think it is... She thought, begging no one.
BUt, her pleas were not heard.
"Catherine." a voice called.
"Oh,no!" she cried.
There was a small chuckle. "Catherine my dear, do you think you could get rid of me that easily?" Smokeshadow said.

Branch felt like he was drowning, not in water, but in old memories. Old and withered, faded, painful. Goldenfur walked up to Branch, he took in her sweet scent, something he had not smelled for a long time. He looked at her, his knees weak. "What are you doing here, Golddenfur?" He asked, his voice cracked and his face screwed up in pain. Goldenfur smiled. "To get you back, of course." She said, and Branch looked pained again. "No. I don't need you anymore. Goldenfur, leave." He said, he knew very well that Goldefur was a very good fighter, and he got ready for the claws.

"No, no, NO!!!!" Catherine cried. "You can't take me back. I've waited forever. You're-you're too late." she whispered.

Goldenfur smiled again, calm. "I will not leave, you want me and you know it." She snarled, raking her claws lightly against Branch's face. Tiny pinpricls of blood appeared, and he looked at Goldenfur. "No." Goldenfur huffed, "I'll be back you stupid furball." She snarled, holding one claw close to his neck, and then storming away. Branch sighed, and turned to face Smokeshadow. He stood close to Catherine.

Smokeshadow's eyes narrowed. He glanced over at Branch, whom Catherine was clinging too. "If you ever want me, I'll come rushing back." he yipped. Then his gaze softened. "I'll be fighting to the very end." He turned, but paused, waiting for Catherine to answer.

"Smokeshadow, I'll never need you back." she whispered. Smokeshadow stalked off into the shadows.

Branch didn't breath until Smokeshadow and Goldenfur were gone. "Holy.. Cow.." He muttered breathlessly.

"No. C'mon. Why does this have to happen?!" Catherine yowled.
